Role

Story Team Designer

As a member of the Salt Company Story Team, I create weekly presentation graphics that support messages, reinforce themes, and enhance the overall gathering experience. Designing for a large audience requires balancing creativity with clarity, ensuring visuals communicate ideas effectively without distracting from the message itself.

What did I do?

Each week, I design presentation slides that visually bring sermon topics and event themes to life. The work involves translating abstract concepts, emotions, and narratives into cohesive visual systems that support communication and audience engagement. To create these designs, I draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including current design trends, visual references, and personal creative exploration. Because projects move on a weekly schedule, the role requires quick iteration, efficient decision-making, and the ability to maintain quality under tight deadlines.

How do you visually communicate a feeling, an idea, or a message to hundreds of people at once? That's the challenge I get to solve every week.

What stands out about this experience?

Unlike many design projects that focus on products or interfaces, this role centers on designing experiences. Every visual becomes part of a larger story, helping set the tone and reinforce key messages during live events. Designing for a large audience has also strengthened my understanding of readability, hierarchy, and visual communication. Every decision, from typography to imagery to color choice, must support comprehension from anywhere in the room.

What did I learn?

Design Should Support the Message

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that effective design isn't always about creating the most visually impressive solution. Often, the best design is the one that helps the audience understand and connect with what's being communicated.

Creativity and Constraint Can Coexist

Working within tight weekly timelines has strengthened my ability to make thoughtful design decisions quickly. I've become more confident adapting inspiration, exploring new visual styles, and finding creative solutions while still maintaining clarity and consistency.

Serving on the Story Team has provided a consistent creative outlet while strengthening my skills in visual storytelling, presentation design, and audience-focused communication. More importantly, it has reinforced my belief that great design succeeds when it supports a message and creates meaningful experiences for the people experiencing it.
