Publishing Intern
As a Publishing Intern at School Datebooks, I worked alongside the publishing and production teams to create and refine materials for print publication. My work focused on ensuring content accuracy, maintaining formatting consistency, and preparing documents for final production. This experience gave me a behind-the-scenes look at the publishing process and showed me how thoughtful document design and attention to detail directly impact the final product.
What did I do?
I supported the creation and editing of school planners and other print materials, reviewing documents for formatting consistency, typographic accuracy, and production readiness. Working within established publishing workflows, I collaborated closely with both publishing and production teams to help ensure projects met quality standards and print deadlines. Throughout the internship, I gained experience managing large amounts of content while maintaining strict attention to detail across multiple versions and revisions.
Sometimes great design isn't about creating something new. It's about making sure every detail is correct before thousands of copies go to print.
What was my role?
My primary responsibility was helping prepare documents for publication by reviewing layouts, editing content, and ensuring files met production specifications. I worked within established systems and processes while collaborating with team members to keep projects moving efficiently from editing to final production. Because print materials leave little room for error, accuracy, consistency, and organization were critical parts of every task.
What stands out about this experience?
Unlike many design projects that focus on ideation and innovation, this role emphasized execution and precision. I learned how much work happens after a design has been created and how important production workflows are to delivering a polished final product. This experience also helped me develop a stronger understanding of typography, layout consistency, quality assurance, and large-scale document management, skills that continue to influence the way I approach design today.
What did I learn?
Details Matter More Than You Think
One of my biggest takeaways was understanding how even minor formatting inconsistencies can have a significant impact when documents are produced at scale. The internship strengthened my attention to detail and taught me the importance of maintaining consistency across every page of a publication.

Working closely with both publishing and production teams showed me the value of clear communication and well-defined workflows. I learned how different teams contribute to the final product and how collaboration helps ensure quality, efficiency, and successful project delivery.
