Project Overview

Summit Seekers is a fitness-focused social app designed to motivate college students to adopt healthier lifestyles by exploring outdoor trails and connecting with peers who share similar goals. The project was created to address the problem of fitness tracker cheating while fostering a supportive, community-oriented approach to physical activity.

Process

Research & Insights

Conducted secondary research to understand fitness habits, barriers, and issues of cheating among college students. User interviews revealed the importance of social influence, stress relief, and technology in motivating physical activity.

Data Analysis & Ideation

Synthesized findings through affinity diagrams and journey mapping. Developed the Summit Seekers concept, integrating features like social sharing, geocaching-inspired rewards, and gamification to encourage genuine participation.

Prototyping & Evaluation

Designed interactive mockups inspired by social media platforms, showcasing features like activity tracking, a customizable dashboard, and a feed for sharing hikes. User feedback on the prototype informed iterative improvements, particularly refining the Summit Surprises feature and enhancing navigation.

Final Design

The final design of Summit Seekers is a mobile app that blends fitness tracking with social connection. The app encourages students to explore local trails, log outdoor activities, and share their progress with friends. A reward system promotes consistency while discouraging cheating, ensuring accountability through GPS-based validation of completed routes.

The interface emphasizes simplicity and motivation, featuring:

  • Trail Discovery – browse and select local trails curated for different fitness levels.

  • Community Feed – connect with peers, share achievements, and celebrate milestones.

  • Verified Tracking – GPS-based activity logging to prevent false entries.

  • Progress Dashboard – visualize personal growth through stats and streaks.

Summit Seekers provides an engaging, community-driven platform that transforms outdoor activity into a social, motivating, and sustainable lifestyle habit for college students.

Reflection

I lead exploration and ideation, crafting the problem statement, conducting research, and designing the friends page. I also worked on activity theory, journey mapping, and evaluations, narrated the project video, and presented our solutions in class.

This project emphasized the value of teamwork and user-centered design. It was rewarding to collaborate with a dedicated team and create a thoughtful, community-focused solution. I also strengthened my research and design skills, especially in Figma, which will benefit future projects.
